Everything had changed so suddenly Suzy wasn’t entirely sure how to deal with it. She’d been in the flat less, taking on extra hours at work to she didn’t have to think too much about what was going on, plus it wasn’t as if they didn’t need the money. She’d get in late and go to her room, with a bottle of wine or cheap vodka more often than not. She knew she couldn’t go on like this. It was completely unfair to Dave and she had to remember she was a grown woman. A grown woman who could deal with complex emotional issues, without the need for alcohol or illegal substances, well with the need for minimal alcohol anyway.

She was back late again, deciding to do the weekly shop before she came home. It was slightly better when she did it, though she always remembered the important things - cigarettes and alcohol. In truth she’d lingered, taking her time, delaying the inevitable moment when she had to walk back into the flat and start to deal with things. She unpacked the things that needed to go into the fridge and freezer then poured two glasses of red wine, a peace offering as she knocked on his bedroom door and waited.

It was almost four am when the two of them left the club. They were drunk, which wasn’t exactly unexpected, in fact in would have been more of an issue if they weren’t. Being drunk didn’t always suit Suzy, it tended to make her reckless which was why they were walking home, well that and a distinct lack of money. It made more sense to save money for nights out and alcohol than for taxis and it wasn’t that far. She had her arm linked with Dave’s, mostly to stop him wandering off, because he did that and she wasn’t quite drunk enough to be willing to walk home alone, especially not considering the shortcut down mugger’s alley a minute or so away from the flat.

Still it seemed pretty quite, as it always was at this time in the morning, the odd group of drunkards waiting for taxis or chancing the walk home like they were doing, and taxis going by, taking people home or with their lights on in some desperate hope of getting one last customer of the night. It was cold though, since putting a coat in the cloak room was yet another waste of money, which meant Sue was staggering especially close to Dave as they walked, as if she was trying to steal some of his body warmth.

They were almost back now, thankfully, because her shoes were starting to hurt and really she wanted to crawl into bed and pass out now. They just had to get down the alley and that was it, the home stretch.
